Week 5 of Pregnancy

Your baby's brain and spinal cord are forming this week. The heart tube is forming and may begin its first contractions. Morning sickness may arrive with full force.

Your Baby This Week

About the size of a sesame seed

Length: ~3mm

Quick Answer

At 5 weeks, your baby is about the size of a sesame seed (~3mm) and something incredible is happening — the neural tube is forming. This is the structure that becomes your baby’s brain and spinal cord. The heart tube is also forming and may begin its first contractions by late this week or early next week, though it won’t be detectable on ultrasound for another week or two. You’ve probably just missed your period, and morning sickness may be making its debut. Yeh pregnancy ka asli start hai.

Baby Development at Week 5

This is one of the most critical weeks of development:

  • Neural tube forms — this will become the brain and spinal cord. This is exactly why folic acid is so important — neural tube defects happen when this process goes wrong
  • Heart tube is forming — a tube-like structure that will begin rhythmic contractions by late week 5 or early week 6 (~90-110 bpm)
  • Three germ layers differentiate — ectoderm (skin, nervous system), mesoderm (heart, muscles, bones), endoderm (lungs, gut, liver)
  • Placenta is growing rapidly — connecting to your blood supply to deliver oxygen and nutrients
  • Umbilical cord is forming — the lifeline between you and your baby

Your baby looks nothing like a baby yet — more like a tiny tadpole. But every major organ system is being blueprinted right now.

Your Body at Week 5

This is often when symptoms first appear. The surge in hCG and progesterone hits hard.

Common Symptoms

SymptomWhat’s HappeningWhat Helps
Nausea/morning sicknesshCG levels are rising rapidly. Can hit any time — not just morningsDry roti or toast before getting up. Ginger tea. Small, frequent meals
Extreme fatigueProgesterone is a sedative. Your body is building a placenta — that takes energyRest without guilt. Nap when possible
Breast tendernessHormones preparing breast tissue for eventual milk productionSupportive bra, even while sleeping
Frequent urinationhCG increases blood flow to kidneys. Uterus pressing on bladderDon’t reduce water — stay hydrated
Mood swingsHormonal rollercoaster — estrogen, progesterone, hCG all fluctuatingNormal. Talk to someone you trust
Light crampingUterus stretching and growingNormal unless severe or one-sided

Is It Normal to Not Have Symptoms?

Yes. Some women don’t get nausea at all — that doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Every pregnancy is different. Symptoms (or lack of them) don’t predict pregnancy health.

Tests & Screenings Due

Confirm Pregnancy

If you haven’t yet, a positive home test at this point is very reliable. Your doctor may order:

  • Beta-hCG blood test — to confirm and check levels
  • Progesterone level — if you have a history of miscarriage, your doctor may check this

Plan Your First Prenatal Visit

Schedule it for 6-8 weeks. This is when:

  • Dating scan can confirm viability and gestational age
  • Heartbeat can be seen
  • Ectopic pregnancy can be ruled out

Don’t worry if your doctor says “come back at 6-7 weeks” — there’s not much to see on ultrasound at week 5.

Nutrition This Week

Neural tube closure is happening now. Your nutrition directly impacts this process.

What to Prioritize

  • Folic acid: 400 mcg/day — this is the single most important supplement right now. Neural tube defects like spina bifida are preventable with adequate folic acid
  • Iron-rich foods — ragi idli/dosa, palak paratha, beetroot juice, gudh ladoo, pomegranate
  • Protein at every meal — moong dal cheela, paneer bhurji, curd rice, egg bhurji, chicken soup
  • Vitamin B6 — helps with nausea. Found in banana, potato, chicken, dal
  • Small meals — 5-6 times a day. Empty stomach worsens nausea

What to Avoid

  • Alcohol — zero. Critical organ formation is happening
  • Unpasteurized dairy — street paneer, raw milk chhena
  • Raw papaya — contains papain which can trigger contractions
  • Excess caffeine — under 200 mg/day (1 cup coffee)
  • Undercooked meat, eggs, fish
  • Self-medication — no ibuprofen. Don’t take aspirin unless prescribed by your doctor

When to Call Your Doctor

These symptoms need immediate attention:

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding — soaking more than 1 pad per hour
  • Severe abdominal pain — especially one-sided (ectopic pregnancy risk)
  • Severe vomiting — unable to keep fluids down for 12+ hours
  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C) — could indicate infection
  • Dizziness or fainting with vaginal bleeding
  • Painful urination with fever — UTI risk increases in pregnancy

Light spotting and mild cramping can be normal in early pregnancy, but always mention them to your doctor.

What’s Coming Up

  • Week 6: Heartbeat visible on vaginal ultrasound. Arm and leg buds emerge. Blood circulation begins
  • Week 7: Baby reaches ~10mm. Limbs are elongating, brain growing rapidly
  • Week 8: Baby officially becomes a “fetus.” All major organs under construction. Nausea peaks

Aapke Sawaal (Common Questions)

5 weeks mein ultrasound karwana chahiye?

Zyaadatar doctors 6-8 weeks pe pehla ultrasound karte hain. 5 weeks mein sirf gestational sac dikh sakta hai — heartbeat abhi detectable nahi hoti. Agar bahut jaldi ultrasound karwa liya aur kuch nahi dikha, toh unnecessary anxiety hoti hai. Doctor ki advice follow karein.

Morning sickness sirf subah hoti hai kya?

Nahi, yeh naam misleading hai. Nausea din mein kisi bhi time ho sakti hai — subah, dopahar, raat. Kuch women ko poora din hoti hai. Dry roti ya rusk subah uthte hi khaayein, khali pet na rahein, aur strong smells avoid karein. Ginger tea aur nimbu paani bhi madad karte hain.

Kya 5 weeks mein miscarriage ka risk zyada hota hai?

First trimester mein miscarriage ka risk overall 10-15% hota hai, aur yeh early weeks mein zyada hota hai. Lekin zyaadatar miscarriages chromosomal abnormalities ki wajah se hote hain — aapke control mein nahi hota. Folic acid lein, alcohol avoid karein, aur apna khayal rakhein. Agar heavy bleeding ya severe pain ho toh turant doctor ko dikhayein.
