Quick Answer
At 35 weeks, your baby is about the size of a pumpkin (~46cm, 2.5 kg). Baby’s brain now weighs about two-thirds of its final weight, and fat stores are increasing rapidly — about 200g per week. This is the week to pack your hospital bag. GBS screening window opens now. Five weeks to go, but baby could come anytime from 37 weeks onward.
Baby Development at Week 35
Your baby is putting on significant weight and the brain is in overdrive:
- Brain weighs two-thirds of final weight — neural connections forming at peak rate. This is why the last few weeks matter so much
- Fat stores increasing rapidly — baby is getting chubby. Fat helps regulate body temperature after birth
- Kidneys fully developed — producing approximately 400-600 mL of urine per day
- Liver can process some waste — but still relies on placenta for most filtering
- Reflexes are coordinated — sucking, swallowing, grasping all working together
- Baby is running out of space — movements are more like pushes and rolls than kicks and somersaults
The fat baby is gaining now is different from earlier weeks — this is white fat (for energy and temperature regulation) vs. brown fat (which generates heat). Both are crucial for life outside the womb.
Your Body at Week 35
Five weeks to go. Your body is preparing for labor in ways you can feel.
Common Symptoms
| Symptom | What’s Happening | What Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Increased Braxton Hicks | More frequent and stronger practice contractions | Hydrate. Change position. Time them — irregular = Braxton Hicks |
| Pelvic pressure | Baby is heavy and possibly dropping lower | Pelvic support belt. Kegels. Rest |
| Nesting urge | Sudden burst of energy to clean, organize, prepare | Go with it but don’t overdo it. Don’t climb ladders or lift heavy things |
| Insomnia | Combination of discomfort, anxiety, bathroom trips | Wind-down routine. Warm milk. Left side sleeping |
| Swollen everything | Feet, ankles, hands, face — especially in the evening | Elevate. Cool water soak. Remove jewelry if tight |
| Lightning crotch | Sharp, shooting pain in pelvis/vagina — baby pressing on nerves | Brief and harmless. Change position |
| Heartburn at peak | Baby is pushing stomach up, acid refluxes easily | Small meals. Don’t eat before bed. Antacids (doctor-approved) |
The Nesting Instinct
Many women get a sudden urge to deep-clean, organize baby clothes, and prepare everything. This is real — it’s hormonal and evolutionary. Channel it productively but don’t exhaust yourself. Ask your partner to handle the heavy lifting.
Tests & Screenings Due
GBS Screening (35-37 Weeks)
This is a key test. Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a normal bacteria that can be present in the vagina/rectum. It’s harmless to you but can cause serious infection in newborns during birth.
- How it’s done: A vaginal and rectal swab. Quick, mildly uncomfortable
- If positive (10-30% of women are): You’ll receive IV antibiotics during labor (usually penicillin). This reduces transmission risk from 1-2% to less than 0.1%
- If negative: No treatment needed
- Important: GBS can come and go, which is why it’s tested late in pregnancy
Routine Visit
- Blood pressure
- Urine protein and sugar
- Fundal height
- Baby’s position
- Fetal heart rate

Nutrition This Week
What to Prioritize
- Dates (khajur) — start eating 6 dates per day from next week (36 weeks). Studies show this may help with cervical dilation and reduce need for induction
- Iron — continue supplements. Final hemoglobin check may be done around now
- Calcium — 1000 mg/day for baby’s bone development
- Vitamin K-rich foods — for blood clotting. Green leafy vegetables
- Small, frequent meals — 5-6 times a day to manage heartburn and energy levels
- Stay hydrated — dehydration can trigger premature contractions
Pre-Labor Energy
In the coming weeks, keep easy-to-eat snacks stocked — granola bars, dry fruits, biscuits. You’ll want quick energy sources during early labor.

Aapke Sawaal (Common Questions)
GBS positive aaya toh kya hoga?
GBS positive hona common hai — 10-30% pregnant women mein hota hai. Iska matlab ye nahi ki aap ya baby beemar hain. Labor shuru hone par aapko IV antibiotics (penicillin) di jaayengi. Ye baby ko infection se bachata hai. C-section mein bhi antibiotics di jaati hain agar water already break ho chuka ho.
Hospital bag kab pack karna chahiye?
Abhi. 35 weeks pe pack karna ideal hai. Kuch babies 37 weeks pe aa jaate hain aur tab rush mein pack karna mushkil hota hai. Ek bag ready rakhein door ke paas. Partner ko bhi batayein ki bag kahan hai.
Kya 35 weeks pe baby aa jaye toh theek hai?
35 weeks pe born babies usually accha karte hain lekin “late preterm” category mein aate hain. NICU mein kuch din lag sakte hain — feeding establish karne aur temperature maintain karne ke liye. Breathing problems rare hain lekin possible hain. Har extra din andar baby ke liye beneficial hai.
