Your Baby This Week

About the size of a avocado

Length: ~12cm, ~100g

Quick Answer

At 16 weeks, your baby is about the size of an avocado (~12cm, ~100g). This week brings exciting milestones — your baby’s lips are fully formed, ears can hear speech and music, and eyes (still closed) are starting to react to light. If this is your second or later pregnancy, you might start feeling fluttery movements any day now. Pehli pregnancy mein usually 18-20 weeks tak wait karna padta hai.

Baby Development at Week 16

Your baby is looking more and more like a newborn:

  • Lips fully formed — distinct upper and lower lips are now visible
  • Ears can hear — your baby can hear your voice, your heartbeat, and external sounds. The inner ear structures are functional
  • Eyes react to light — eyelids are still fused shut, but the retinas can sense light. If you shine a flashlight on your belly, baby might turn away
  • Head more erect — neck muscles are strengthening, head is more upright
  • Toenails forming — tiny toenails are growing
  • Circulatory system working — the heart is pumping several litres of blood per day
  • Coordinated limb movements — arms and legs are moving in more purposeful ways

At 100g, your baby now has real weight. The placenta is about the same size as the baby at this point.

Your Body at Week 16

You’re likely feeling good — and starting to look pregnant. The bump is becoming visible, especially in fitted clothes.

Second Pregnancy — Quickening Earlier

If this isn’t your first pregnancy, you may feel baby’s movements (quickening) as early as 16-18 weeks. It feels like fluttering, bubbling, or gas at first. Pehli pregnancy mein usually 18-20 weeks tak feel hota hai — because you don’t know what to look for yet.

Tests & Screenings Due

Quadruple Marker (If Not Done)

The window for quadruple marker test is 15-20 weeks. If your doctor recommended it and you haven’t done it yet, schedule it soon.

Amniocentesis (If Indicated)

If previous screening showed high risk, your doctor may recommend amniocentesis (from 15 weeks onward (typically 15-20 weeks)). This is a diagnostic test — it gives a definitive answer, not a probability. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Routine

  • Blood pressure, weight
  • Urine protein and sugar
  • Fundal height measurement may start now

Nutrition This Week

What to Prioritize

  • Protein — baby’s muscles are growing rapidly. Dal, rajma, chole, paneer, eggs, chicken. Aim for protein in every meal
  • Iron: 60 mg/day — if constipation from iron is bad, ask your doctor about iron bisglycinate (better tolerated)
  • Calcium: 1000 mg/day — critical for baby’s bones hardening now. Ragi, til, curd, milk
  • Omega-3 (DHA) — for baby’s hearing and brain development. Walnuts, flaxseeds
  • Magnesium — may help with leg cramps. Green leafy vegetables, almonds, pumpkin seeds

Hydration

Water needs increase in the second trimester. Aim for 2.5-3 litres per day. Coconut water, chaas, nimbu paani — variety helps you drink more. Dehydration can trigger Braxton Hicks contractions later.

When to Call Your Doctor

  • Any vaginal bleeding — always needs evaluation in the second trimester
  • Gush of clear fluid — could indicate premature rupture of membranes
  • Severe headache with visual disturbances — blurred vision, seeing spots or flashing lights
  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C)
  • Severe abdominal pain — especially if constant or worsening
  • Burning or painful urination with fever
  • Sudden swelling of face or hands — could be early pre-eclampsia sign

What’s Coming Up

  • Week 17: Fat begins to deposit under baby’s skin. Vernix (protective coating) appears
  • Week 18: Baby covered in lanugo. Sleep-wake cycle developing. Responds to loud sounds
  • Week 20: Anomaly scan — the big mid-pregnancy ultrasound. Halfway point

Aapke Sawaal (Common Questions)

Kya baby meri awaaz sun sakta hai ab?

Haan! Week 16 se baby ke kaan itne develop ho gaye hain ki aapki awaaz, heartbeat, aur bahar ki awaazein sun sakta hai. Baby aapki awaaz se sabse zyada familiar hota hai — research shows newborns apni maa ki awaaz recognize karte hain aur prefer karte hain. Baat karein, gaana sunayein.

Mujhe abhi tak baby ki movement feel nahi ho rahi — kya normal hai?

Bilkul normal hai. Pehli pregnancy mein zyaadatar women ko 18-20 weeks mein pehli baar movement feel hoti hai. Doosri pregnancy mein thoda pehle (16-18 weeks). Jab hogi toh pehle butterflies ya gas jaisi lagegi — baad mein clear kicks mehsoos hongi.

Pair mein cramps aa rahe hain raat ko — kya karoon?

Ye bahut common hai pregnancy mein. Sone se pehle calf muscles stretch karein. Paani zyada peeyein. Calcium aur magnesium check karwayein. Kela, badam, aur curd khayein. Agar cramp aaye toh pair ko seedha karein aur toes ko apni taraf kheenchein.

Week 16 Checklist

  • Talk and sing to your baby — ears are developed enough to hear you
  • Continue iron 60 mg/day and calcium supplementation
  • Confirm your anomaly scan appointment (18-22 weeks, optimal at 20 weeks)
  • Do pelvic floor exercises daily
  • If second pregnancy, you may feel first movements (quickening) anytime now
  • Invest in comfortable, low-heeled footwear
  • Moisturise your belly and thighs — skin is stretching
