Length: ~8.5cm

Quick Answer

At 14 weeks, your baby is about the size of a lemon (~8.5cm). Welcome to the second trimester — the so-called honeymoon phase of pregnancy. Your baby’s skin is thickening, fine hair (lanugo) is starting to grow, and fingerprints are forming. External genitals are differentiating, though reliable sex determination on ultrasound is still a few weeks away (18-20 weeks). The best part? Nausea is likely fading and energy is coming back. Bahut achha time hai ye.

Baby Development at Week 14

The second trimester kicks off with your baby making rapid progress:

  • Skin is thickening — no longer translucent, though still very thin
  • Fine hair (lanugo) growing — soft downy hair covering the body to help regulate temperature
  • Fingerprints forming — your baby’s unique identity is literally taking shape
  • External genitals differentiating — though reliable identification on ultrasound is still a few weeks away (18-20 weeks)
  • Facial expressions emerging — baby can squint, frown, and grimace
  • Sucking reflex developing — baby may start sucking their thumb
  • Growing fast — arms are now in proportion to the body

Your baby is moving more actively now, though most mothers won’t feel these movements for another 4-6 weeks.

Your Body at Week 14

This is when many women start to feel human again. Energy returns, nausea fades, and you might actually enjoy food again.

The “Honeymoon Trimester”

Most women feel their best during weeks 14-26. Morning sickness eases, fatigue lifts, and the bump is still manageable. Agar aapko abhi bhi nausea ho raha hai — don’t worry, it clears up for most women by week 16. A small percentage have it longer, and that’s also okay.

Tests & Screenings Due

Week 14 is relatively light on tests if your first trimester screening went well.

If First Trimester Screening Was Done

  • No new tests this week. Your NT scan + dual marker results from weeks 11-13 should be with you
  • If anything was flagged, your doctor may discuss NIPT or diagnostic testing (amniocentesis is done from 15 weeks onward)

If First Trimester Screening Was Missed

  • Quadruple marker test can be done between 15-20 weeks as a second trimester screening option
  • Discuss timing with your doctor at your next visit

Routine

  • Blood pressure and weight check at each visit
  • Urine protein and sugar

Nutrition This Week

Second trimester = time to eat well. Your body now needs more.

What to Prioritize

  • Extra calories: ~350 kcal/day above your pre-pregnancy intake (ICMR guideline for 2nd trimester)
  • Iron: 60 mg/day — start supplementation now. Take with vitamin C (nimbu, amla) for better absorption. Avoid taking with tea/coffee
  • Protein: increase intake — dal, paneer, curd, eggs, chicken, soy. Aim for 60-70g/day
  • Calcium — milk, curd, ragi, til (sesame), almonds. 1000 mg/day target
  • Omega-3 — walnuts, flaxseeds, fish (if non-veg, avoid high-mercury fish)
  • Fibre — constipation is common now. Whole grains, fruits with skin, sabzi

What to Avoid

  • Raw or undercooked meat and eggs
  • Unpasteurized dairy
  • Excess caffeine (less than 200 mg/day)
  • Alcohol — no safe amount

When to Call Your Doctor

Second trimester is generally safer, but these need immediate attention:

  • Any vaginal bleeding — even light spotting after the first trimester needs evaluation
  • Gush of fluid from vagina — could indicate membrane rupture
  • Severe headache with visual changes — blurred vision, seeing spots
  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C)
  • Painful urination with fever
  • Severe abdominal pain — constant, not the occasional stretching feeling

Round ligament pain (sharp, brief jabs when you move) is normal. Constant, worsening pain is not.

What’s Coming Up

  • Week 15: Baby’s organs moving to permanent positions. Quadruple marker window opens (15-20 weeks)
  • Week 16: Baby can hear your voice! Lips fully formed
  • Weeks 18-20: First kicks (quickening). Anomaly scan window opens

Aapke Sawaal (Common Questions)

Kya 14 weeks mein baby ka gender pata chal sakta hai?

Medically haan — external genitals fully developed hain aur ultrasound pe identify ho sakta hai. Lekin India mein sex determination illegal hai (PCPNDT Act). Koi bhi doctor ye information nahi dega, aur ye sahi bhi hai.

Second trimester mein energy kab aayegi?

Zyaadatar women ko week 14-16 ke beech mein fark mehsoos hota hai. Nausea kam hota hai, neend better hoti hai, aur appetite laut aata hai. Agar week 16 tak bhi bahut zyada thakan ho, toh hemoglobin aur thyroid check karwa lein.

Kya ab exercise start kar sakti hoon?

Haan — ye sabse achha time hai. Walking, swimming, prenatal yoga sab safe hain. Pelvic floor exercises (Kegels) zaroor start karein. Heavy lifting aur contact sports avoid karein. Doctor se ek baar confirm kar lein agar koi high-risk factor hai.

Week 14 Checklist
