Follow the correct reporting route, lock the spelling, understand the unnamed-certificate option, and leave local document rules to the registrar who actually holds the record.
Quick answer
India’s normal birth-reporting period is 21 days. A hospital reports an institutional birth; a birth can also be registered before the child’s name is chosen. The registration office and later name-insertion process depend on where the birth occurred and the applicable state rules.

Name not final?
Section 14 allows the birth record and certificate to exist without the child’s name.
Correct office
Registration is handled where the event occurred—not automatically where the family later lives.

The four common paths
Birth in an institution
The medical officer in charge or an authorised person is responsible for reporting a hospital, health-centre, maternity-home or nursing-home birth. Ask for the reporting status, registration unit and reference. Avoid filing a second report merely because the certificate is not visible yet.
Birth at home
For a home birth, the head of the household, nearest relative or another responsible person described in the rules reports the event. The CRS FAQ notes that Anganwadi workers, ANMs, ASHAs and other prescribed notifiers may assist.
Name not chosen
A birth certificate can be issued without the child’s name. Official CRS guidance says the name can be entered without charge within 12 months of registration and with the prescribed fee up to 15 years. Ask the record-holding registrar for the current local form and proof.
Something is wrong
Adding a previously blank child name falls under the name-entry process. Correcting an erroneous existing entry is handled under Section 15 and state rules. Tell the registrar which situation applies before collecting affidavits or paying anyone.

Documents and spellings
The exact requirements depend on the state, registration unit, place of birth and whether the request is timely, delayed, unnamed or corrective. Ask the responsible registrar first. A useful preparation folder may include the institution’s birth report or discharge record, the acknowledgement, identity/address evidence requested locally, and any proof supporting a correction—but none of these should be presented as mandatory nationwide without checking.
The spelling lock
Write the full child name and every parent/guardian name once, including spaces and surname. Compare the agreed version with each form before signing. If another script is requested, ask a fluent family member to check both versions.
Yes. The Registrar General of India’s Civil Registration System guidance says a birth certificate can be obtained without the child’s name. The name can be entered by the registration authority later under Section 14 and the applicable state rules.
The normal reporting period is 21 days from the birth. The official CRS FAQ says no registration fee is charged when the event is reported within this period. Delayed registration remains possible under Section 13, but the evidence, approval and fees depend on the delay and applicable state rules.
For a birth in a hospital, health centre, maternity home or nursing home, the medical officer in charge or an authorised person is responsible for reporting it. Parents should confirm the reporting status and registration unit with the institution rather than submitting a duplicate report.
CRS guidance says the event is registered at the place where it occurred. The responsible office may be a municipality, municipal corporation, panchayat, government-hospital registration unit or another local registrar appointed by the state.
The national CRS FAQ says the registration authority can enter the child’s name without charge within 12 months of registration, and with the prescribed fee up to 15 years. The form, proof and service route are controlled locally, so confirm them with the registrar that holds the record.
Corrections and cancellations are handled under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act and the corresponding state rules. Contact the registrar that holds the record and ask for the exact evidence and procedure before filing.
