Hospital Bag Checklist for Delivery in India

Quick answer: Start with your hospital, not a universal shopping list. Ask what the maternity unit supplies, permits and requires. Then keep the admission folder easy to reach and divide the rest into a small arrival bag, a ward and going-home bag, and an optional support-person pouch.

Before packing: ask the maternity desk

One short call can prevent most overpacking. Ask your hospital, birth centre or nursing home:

1. Which photo ID, registration paper, maternity records and payment or insurance documents should we bring?
2. Which gowns, pads, nappies, baby wraps, toiletries, towels and drinking water does the facility provide?
3. What may enter the labour or operating area? Should a small baby receiving set be labelled and handed over separately?
4. Is a support person allowed? Do they need identification, specific clothing, food or overnight items?
5. Does anything change for our planned admission, caesarean, induction, multiple pregnancy or individual care plan?

Write the hospital’s answers on your own copy or admission sheet. This page does not ask you to enter the hospital name, pregnancy details, dates or medical information.

Admission folder

Keep this folder on top or in the hand of the person handling admission.

• Hospital registration, booking or admission paper requested by the facility
• A photo ID the hospital accepts—not necessarily Aadhaar
• Antenatal record, prescriptions, scan and test reports requested by the maternity team
• Current medicine list and medicines only as instructed, in their labelled packaging if requested
• Insurance or TPA card, policy number and authorization or employer paper, if applicable
• Payment method and the hospital’s billing or deposit information
• Maternity-unit, doctor and chosen support-person contact numbers
• A copy of birth preferences, only if you made one with the care team

If you plan to use cashless insurance, confirm that the facility is in the relevant network and ask the hospital or insurer what authorization and KYC documents apply. Small arrival or labour bag

Pack only what your hospital permits in the labour or procedure area.

• One loose, comfortable outfit if the hospital allows your own clothing
• Slip-on footwear and socks or a light layer if useful
• Glasses and contact-lens essentials, if used
• Phone and a long charging cable or permitted power bank
• Water bottle and simple snack only if the hospital permits them
• Hair ties, lip care and one small comfort item
• Baby receiving set in the size and form the hospital requests
• Admission folder, if the hospital wants it at this stage

Label this bag clearly and show the support person where each item is. A short list on the outside is often more useful than extra products inside.

Ward and going-home bag

Adjust quantities after asking what the facility supplies and how long the team expects you to stay.

For the birthing parent

• Loose nightwear or clothing with front or feeding access, if useful
• Comfortable underwear and the type of pads the hospital recommends
• Going-home clothes that do not feel restrictive
• Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, comb and other basic toiletries
• Towel, slippers, hair ties, lip care and glasses essentials
• Nursing bra or breast pads only if wanted or advised
• Dirty-laundry or wet bag
• Any personal item the hospital has confirmed is allowed

For the baby

• Soft, weather-appropriate clothes in the quantity requested
• Going-home outfit
• Nappies and wipes or cotton only if the hospital asks you to bring them
• Muslin or receiving cloths
• Towel, wrap or blanket if the hospital does not supply them
• Caps, socks or mittens only if useful for the climate or requested
• Suitable arrangement for the journey home

Do not pack formula, bottles, pumps, medicines, creams, powders, oils, cord-care products or medical devices simply because they appear on another checklist. Ask the maternity and newborn team what is appropriate and what the hospital supplies.

Optional support-person pouch

Use “support person” for whoever will actually help—partner, relative, friend or another permitted companion. If nobody will stay, skip this section.

• Photo ID or visitor pass required by the hospital
• Phone, charger and saved admission contacts
• House and vehicle keys, payment method and transport or parking plan
• Personal medicines and glasses, if used
• Change of clothes and toiletries if an overnight stay is permitted
• Food and water if permitted and not supplied
• A note showing where the admission folder and receiving set are packed
• A plan for collecting extra items without storing valuables in the room

Planned admission or caesarean: ask, do not guess

A planned admission may have different arrival, clothing, jewellery, contact-lens, food, medicine and document instructions. Ask the hospital and treating team:

• What time and location should we report to, and which papers should be ready?
• What should be left at home before the procedure?
• What clothing would be comfortable for discharge?
• Which post-procedure personal supplies does the hospital provide?
• Does the team want any prescribed medicine or device brought from home?

Avoid assumptions and overpacking

• Aadhaar is not the only possible ID. Bring the photo ID your hospital or scheme accepts.
• Private and public facilities do not follow one supply list. Confirm the actual facility rather than packing for a stereotype.
• A support person is not always allowed. Check the visitor and overnight policy first.
• Outside food and charging equipment may be restricted. Ask before relying on them.
• Cashless does not mean every charge is covered. Confirm network status, authorization and policy limits.
• Valuables and excess cash can stay home. Keep only the payment method and small contingency your plan needs.
• The hospital bag is not the newborn-home list. Bulky nursery supplies can wait at home.
• More items do not mean more prepared. A labelled bag that another person can navigate is the better goal.

Five-minute final check

Before placing the bags by the door:

1. Put the admission folder where it can be reached without opening the large bag.
2. Label each bag by moment: arrival, ward/baby, and support person.
3. Show the support person the receiving set, documents and chargers.
4. Save the maternity unit’s contact and route in the phones you will carry.
5. Leave a short “still to add” note for daily-use items such as the phone, glasses or current medicines.

Do I need a separate caesarean hospital-bag checklist?

Usually the core admission, comfort, baby and support-person categories remain the same. Ask the treating hospital what changes for the planned procedure rather than relying on a generic list of binders, medicines, wound products or feeding equipment.

Should I bring formula, bottles or a breast pump?

Do not pack them by default from an online list. Ask the maternity and newborn team what the hospital provides and what, if anything, they want you to bring for your individual feeding plan.
