Every child develops at their own pace — but some signs shouldn't be ignored. As parents, it's natural to compare your baby's milestones with others, but what really matters is knowing the red flags that may indicate a developmental delay.
This age-by-age guide will help you understand what to watch for from birth to 2 years. Early identification means early intervention — and that can make all the difference.
0 to 3 Months: Foundational Red Flags
The first three months are about basic reflexes, sensory responses, and early social connection.
- Motor: Unable to hold head up briefly by 3 months, persistently stiff or floppy body, hands tightly clenched after first few weeks, asymmetric movement of arms or legs
- Social: No social smile by 3 months, not paying attention to new faces, difficulty with eye contact or tracking objects, not turning toward loud sounds
- Cognitive: No interest in hands (gazing at them, bringing to mouth) by 3 months
- Sensory: Not responding to loud noises at all, extreme sensitivity to light or touch
