Understanding Teething in Infants

Teething is a natural and often challenging milestone in an infant's life. Typically beginning around 6 months of age, it marks the emergence of a baby’s first set of teeth. Here’s a brief overview of its causes and how you can soothe your little one during this time.

Causes of Teething

Teething occurs as the baby’s teeth start to push through the gums. This process can be uncomfortable because the new teeth are moving through the delicate gum tissue, leading to symptoms such as drooling, irritability, swollen gums, and a tendency to chew on objects.

Possible Solutions

Teething Toys: Giving your baby a safe, cool teething ring or toy to chew on can help ease the discomfort. The pressure can provide relief to sore gums.

Cold Compress: Applying a cold washcloth or a chilled teething ring to the baby’s gums can reduce inflammation and numb the area slightly, offering relief from pain.

Gentle Gum Massage: Using a clean finger, gently massaging your baby’s gums can help alleviate discomfort.

Over-the-Counter Remedies: If your baby seems particularly uncomfortable, consult your pediatrician about using over-the-counter teething gels or infant pain relievers.

Distraction: Sometimes, a little distraction can go a long way. Engage your baby with favorite toys, books, or a gentle walk to divert their attention from the discomfort.
